Ongoing Research

J. Stansberry continued as lead for the NIRCam Operations team. NIRCam is a 40
mega-pixel, visible to near-IR (0.7 -- 5 microns) camera being developed by the
University of Arizona (M. Rieke, P.I.) and Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology
Center (S. Horner, Instrument Scientist). The operations team bears primary
responsibility for defining how the instrument will be used to obtain
calibration and science observations once it has been launched aboard the James
Webb Space Telescope (JWST, a 6-meter space-based IR observatory scheduled for
launch in 2013). (Instumentation)

J. Stansberry, in collaboration with W. Grundy (Lowell Observatory), M. Brown
(CalTech), J. Spencer (Southwest Research Institute) and others continued using
the Spitzer Space Telescope to measure the albedos and diameters of Kuiper Belt
Objects.  This work has led to an initial characterization of these physical
parameters for a sample of 40 KBOs (to be published by the University of Arizona
Press in January, 2008). (Solar System)

J. Stansberry led the calibration effort for the 160 micron chanel of the
Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS, (G. Rieke P.I), a far-IR (24 --
160 microns) camera operating on the Spitzer Space Telescope). This was a
significant effort, and benefited from the contributions of many on the MIPS team,
both at the University of Arizona and at the Spitzer Science Center (CalTech).
