Ongoing Research

McCarthy and Kulesa continued to develop the ARIES instrument for the MMT
adaptive optics system. They supported the existing near-IR imager section for
observing by faculty and graduate students on a variety of projects ranging from
extrasolar planet detection and star formation to quasar host galaxies.
Development of three spectroscopic modes in the spectrometer section progressed
steadily and was made available to the community.

McCarthy and Kulesa modified the PISCES near-IR camera to provide both
wide-field and diffraction-limited observing modes on the Bok 2.3m, MMT, and LBT
telescopes. PISCES provides the infrared validation camera for the Laser Guide
Star program at the MMT.

The occultation of star P445.3 by Pluto was observed in March at the MMT.
McCarthy organized the integration of the PISCES camera and MIT's POETS camera
in the MMT's Top Box. Although the occultation was a grazing event, the
unprecedented signal-to-noise in the H-band lightcurve reveals planet-wide
bouyancy waves in the atmosphere of Pluto. No chromatic effects due to clouds or
haze were detected.

McCarthy leads the education and public outreach effort for Steward’s NIRCam
project with the James Webb Space Telescope. This effort is a partnership with
the Girl Scouts of the USA and has led to major improvements in the national
curriculum about astronomy for middle-school ages. Two training workshops are
held each year for adult leaders around the world.
